“And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.” - Exodus 14:31

Exodus 14:31, records a pivotal moment in Israel’s history: “And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.” This verse captures the profound effect of God’s miraculous deliverance at the Red Sea, when He parted the waters, allowing the Israelites to escape from Pharaoh’s army, and then brought the waters back upon their enemies, destroying them.

What stands out here is the response of the people: they “feared the LORD” and “believed the LORD.” The fear described here is not a craven, terrified fear, but a deep reverence and awe of God’s unmatched power and holiness. The Israelites had just witnessed the undeniable power of God in action. The miracles they saw on the shores of the Red Sea left them with no doubt about the greatness of God and His ability to fulfill His promises. This awe led them to trust in Him more deeply.

The second part of their response is equally significant: they “believed the LORD.” The crossing of the Red Sea confirmed that God was not only with them, but that He could be trusted to protect and deliver them from any danger. Their belief in God moved beyond mere acknowledgment to a deeper, personal trust. This is the essence of faith—trusting in God's power and promises, even when circumstances seem impossible.

This passage reminds us of the importance of seeing God's works in our lives. The more we reflect on how He has shown Himself faithful—whether through His Word, the lives of others, or our own experiences—the greater our reverence for Him and our trust in His ability to act on our behalf. When we understand God’s greatness, we respond with a heart that both fears and believes. This is the foundation of living in confident faith.
